Shona sculpture is the traditions of an ancient African culture, yet stunningly modern in appearance.
Shona sculptors create in living stone, profound expression of the human spirit transcending in geography and time.
Sculpting by hand with simple and found tools, these self-taught artists carve in indigenous serpentine, opal, granite, and rare precious verdite. The unique rock illumines with more than 200 natural color and texture variations. The result is a diverse body of work alive with dynamic, spiritual themes.
Shona sculpture is part of permanent collections of the Rodin Museum, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Mankind, London; National Gallery of Zimbabwe; the Museum of Modern Art, Frankfurt and National History Museum, San Diego.
Purchased signed featured pieces come with a biography and a picture of the artist when available. |
